Kava Kava is a member of the pepper family, with a traditional history of usage that dates back over 3000 years in the South Pacific as a natural relaxant.  Kava beverages are considered the national drink of Fiji, and it is used both socially and ceremonially throughout the island nations of the South Pacific region.  Kava Kava has also been called the anti-shyness herb.

Properties of Kava Kava

 

Kavalactones – the activity of Kava Kava can be attributed to a group of compounds known as Kavalactones or Kavapyrones.  The Kavalactone root content can vary from 3% to 20%, and more than a dozen Kavalactones have so far been identified.  These Kavalactones include kawain and methysticin, although research has shown that the naturally occurring combination of Kavalactones is more effective than any one on its own.

 

Contra-indications/Precautions

 

In rare cases, high usage (400mg Kavalactones daily for period of three months or more) can result in a dry, scaly, reversible rash.  This herb should not be taken by pregnant or lactating women.  Kava should not be used in conjunction with antidepressants and alcohol.
